Dave Chappelle was attacked during his stand-up set at the “Netflix is a Joke” festival in L.A. on Tuesday (May 3) night. The man, identified as Isaiah Lee, 23, came at Chappelle with a fake gun that had a knife attached, and he was later beaten up by an angry mob. Lee was also arrested and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon.
After the incident, Chappelle came back on stage, and he was joined by Chris Rock, who took the mic and jokingly stated, “I thought that was Will Smith!” Rock was referring to Will Smith slapping him on March 27 during the 94th Annual Academy Awards. Some people have blamed Smith’s actions at the Oscars for making it acceptable for people to attack comedians during their shows.
Following the Oscars slap, Will Smith released an apology to Chris Rock. He was also banned from attending any Oscars-related events, and Smith resigned from the Academy.
