After the incident, Chappelle came back on stage, and he was joined by Chris Rock, who took the mic and jokingly stated, “I thought that was Will Smith!” Rock was referring to Will Smith slapping him on March 27 during the 94th Annual Academy Awards. Some people have blamed Smith’s actions at the Oscars for making it acceptable for people to attack comedians during their shows.
Following the Oscars slap, Will Smith released an apology to Chris Rock. He was also banned from attending any Oscars-related events, and Smith resigned from the Academy.
