The Taylor family’s ordinary evening turned tragic when Hurricane Helene swept through eastern Middle Georgia, claiming the lives of two dozen people, including their young children, Derrick and Harmony.
On September 26, 2024, Crystal Taylor, 34, and her 11-year-old daughter, Cassidy, were watching TV as the storm approached, unaware of the impending disaster.
As the family knew the hurricane was coming, they underestimated its impact. At 4:00 a.m., a massive oak tree crashed onto the house, trapping Derrick, 4, and Harmony, 7, in their bedroom. Herbert Taylor, 39, cried out for his children as the house erupted in flames. Crystal and Cassidy escaped to a neighbor’s house, where Cassidy bravely called 911.
Rescuers fought to save the children, but it took over five hours to reach them. Tragically, Derrick and Harmony lost their lives instantly. The Taylors are now grieving, grateful for the outpouring of support and prayers from their community. A GoFundMe page has raised over $45,000 to help with funeral expenses and daily needs.
Hurricane Helene’s devastation extends beyond the Taylors. The storm has claimed at least 135 lives, with the Carolinas suffering the worst damage. One heartbreaking story is of Megan Drye, who lost her 7-year-old son, Micah, and parents in a flood. Megan’s sister, Jessica, shared updates on Facebook, revealing Micah’s final words: “Jesus! Please help me!”
As families struggle to rebuild, the community comes together to support those affected. The Taylors and others appreciate the kindness, prayers, and financial aid.
Herbert expressed gratitude on Facebook, saying, “I wanna thank everybody for the calls, txt, and all the luv and prayers we been getting. It really means a lot to us at this difficult time.” Crystal also acknowledged the support, stating, “Nothing has gone unnoticed, and me and my family appreciate all the love shown to us during this time.”
The community’s generosity has been overwhelming, with over 750 donations received. The GoFundMe page organized by Brittany Price and Jenna Barefield has raised significant funds to support the Taylor family. Similarly, a GoFundMe page set up by Heather Kephart for her sister, Megan Drye, aims to help Megan rebuild her life after losing everything.
Hurricane Helene’s aftermath serves as a poignant reminder of the power of nature and the resilience of those affected. As the community continues to rally around the families, they find solace in the kindness and support that surrounds them.
The devastating storm has left an indelible mark on the lives of those affected. However, through their grief, the families find strength in their faith and the outpouring of love from their community.
