Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers player Warrick Dunn continues to make a lasting impact on families in Florida, long after hanging up his football cleats. Through his nonprofit, Warrick Dunn Charities, and partnership with Habitat for Humanity, Dunn recently surprised single mom LaToya Reedy and her 18-year-old son with a fully furnished two-bedroom home in St. Petersburg.
As LaToya, 39, stepped into her new home for the first time, tears of joy filled her eyes. “Being a homeowner now, I can be at home,” she exclaimed. For two years, LaToya and her son, AnTrez, had shared a bedroom at her mother’s house, struggling to make ends meet.
LaToya’s journey as a nursing assistant had been marked by hardship and sacrifice. But now, thanks to Dunn’s generosity, she can create lasting memories with her family and friends. “I can be at peace,” she said, her voice filled with gratitude.
This heartwarming moment wasn’t a one-time gesture. LaToya is the 173rd single mother to receive a home through Dunn’s Foundation. The former NFL star’s mission is deeply personal, driven by his own experiences.
After losing his mother, Betty Smothers, to violence when he was just 17, Dunn took on the responsibility of caring for his five siblings. His mother’s selflessness and compassion inspired him to pay it forward.
“My mom was superwoman,” Dunn reflected. “She was kind, thoughtful, and helpful. I strive to embody those qualities through my foundation.” By providing homes for single mothers, Dunn honors his mother’s legacy and empowers families to build brighter futures.
As LaToya settles into her new home, she represents a testament to Dunn’s enduring impact. His commitment to supporting single mothers continues to bring hope and stability to those who need it most. Dunn’s legacy extends far beyond his football career, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those he has touched.
