Shirley Jones’ Life of Love, Loss, and Triumph

Shirley Jones, the talented actress and singer, celebrates her 89th birthday today, marking a lifetime of achievements, love, and resilience. Her life has been a rollercoaster of emotions, from falling in love with a married man to becoming a doting grandmother to 13 grandchildren.

Jones’ journey began when she met Jack Cassidy, a charming actor with a troubled past. Despite being married, Cassidy swept Jones off her feet, and they began a whirlwind romance. Their love was forbidden, but they couldn’t deny the strong connection between them. Jones has described Cassidy as “startlingly handsome” with “hypnotic blue eyes” that drew her in.

As their relationship deepened, Jones found herself torn between her love for Cassidy and the guilt of being involved with a married man. Cassidy’s divorce from his wife, Evelyn Ward, was messy, and Ward’s bitterness towards Jones was palpable. Ward even went so far as to use their young son, David, to sabotage Cassidy and Jones’ relationship.

Despite the challenges, Jones and Cassidy married in 1956 and had three sons together. Their marriage was marked by passion and creativity, with both actors working together on various projects. However, their relationship was also tumultuous, with Cassidy’s infidelity and Jones’ rising fame putting a strain on their marriage.

One of the most significant challenges they faced was Cassidy’s complicated relationship with his son, David. David’s mother had poisoned him against Jones, portraying her as a “wicked stepmother.” However, Jones was determined to win David over and eventually formed a strong bond with him.

Tragedy struck when Cassidy passed away in 1976, leaving Jones devastated. She later married actor and comedian Marty Ingels, but admitted that she wouldn’t have married him if Cassidy were still alive.

Despite the ups and downs, Jones’ relationship with David remained strong. They worked together on the popular TV show “The Partridge Family,” and David even credited Jones with being a positive influence in his life.

Today, Jones looks back on her life with pride and gratitude. She is proud of her three sons, who have grown into successful men, and adores her 13 grandchildren. As she celebrates her 89th birthday, Jones reflects on the importance of living in the moment and cherishing the time with loved ones.
