Francis McGuirk, a 50-year-old golf professional, received a suspended sentence at Canterbury Crown Court for attempting to set fire to his Sandwich, Kent property in June 2023.
The incident occurred while his ex-partner and three children were away, and McGuirk had warned his ex-wife via voice messages that he would “burn the house to the ground.”
According to prosecutor Caroline Knight, McGuirk broke into the empty house, locked the doors, and attempted to start a fire using cooking oil and lighter fluid. Fortunately, neighbors alerted emergency services, and the fire caused minor damage.
McGuirk’s motive was deemed spiteful, but the judge considered his mental health and sentenced him to 20 months in prison, suspended for two years.
He must also pay £13,555 in costs, complete 200 hours of community service, attend 30 rehabilitation sessions, and undergo 120 days of alcohol monitoring.
A five-year restraining order was imposed to protect his estranged wife, whom he is yet to finalize divorce proceedings with. If McGuirk commits any offense in the next two years, he will face custody.
This sentence serves as a stern warning and a chance for McGuirk to seek help and reflect on his actions.
