How to Skip an Entry Rug

Tired of their mischievous cat Lucky’s constant destruction of entry rugs, the author embarked on a creative solution. They replaced the worn laminate flooring with stylish hexagon tiles, mirroring the kitchen’s flooring. Despite the cat’s best efforts to soil the rubbery mat, the new tiles brought a touch of elegance to the entryway.

With a clear plan in mind, the old flooring was carefully cut out, making way for the new tiles. To combat potential moisture issues, a waterproofing membrane and liquid membrane were applied. The tiles were then laid with rapid-setting mortar, followed by a patient grouting process.

To achieve a polished finish, exterior gaps were left for caulking, allowing for flexibility and movement. Grouting may be messy, but it’s a crucial step. A helpful tip: use baby wipes to remove grout film from tiles.

The final flourish came with caulking the edges, hiding any irregular cuts and creating a seamless look. The completed floor not only solved the cat-related woes but also became a practical and visually stunning entryway, ready to withstand wet and muddy shoes.

This project transformed a ruined floor into a functional and beautiful space, all thanks to a little creativity and a lot of patience.
