As Jimmy Carter approaches his 100th birthday on October 1, his grandson Jason Carter shared a poignant update on his grandfather’s health. Jason spoke candidly during a musical tribute to Jimmy, “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song.”
Jason revealed that despite being in hospice care for over 19 months, Jimmy remains emotionally engaged and present. “He’s physically diminished, but still experiences love and laughter,” Jason said.
The Carter family initially believed Jimmy’s life expectancy was limited when he entered hospice in February 2023. However, Jason noted, “God had other plans.”
In a conversation with Southern Living, Jason described Jimmy’s daily struggles, including irregular wakefulness and unpredictable emotional states.
Jimmy’s late wife, Rosalynn, passed away in November 2023, after 77 years of marriage. Jason acknowledged the difficulty of comprehending his grandfather’s emotional turmoil.
Jason shared Jimmy’s humble admission about his own health: “I don’t know, myself.” This vulnerability underscores the complexity of Jimmy’s experiences.
The decision to provide Jimmy with hospice care in Plains, Georgia, was deliberate. Jason explained, “Plains is where he finds peace and support.”
Despite physical limitations, Jimmy still experiences love and frustration. Jason emphasized the importance of cherishing these moments.
The Carter Center announced a star-studded musical celebration, “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song,” on August 1, 2024. The event honored Jimmy’s love of music.
Jason reflected, “Music brings my grandfather joy, solace, and inspiration. This musical tribute is a fitting tribute to his 100th birthday.”
Jimmy Carter’s legacy continues to inspire, and his family’s love and support shine through in these challenging times.
