As I lay in bed the night before my college entrance exam, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. Becoming a doctor had been my dream since my mom passed away from cancer, and I was determined to make it a reality. I set multiple alarms to ensure I wouldn’t oversleep, but little did I know that fate had other plans.
The next morning, I woke up to find that my alarms had been turned off. Panic set in as I realized the exam was about to start, and I was running perilously late. I rushed downstairs, where my stepmom, Linda, was sipping her coffee. I begged her to take me to the exam center, but her response left me stunned. With a smile on her face, she said, “Maybe this is a sign that you’re not cut out for med school.”
I was shocked and disheartened by her words. With no other options, I decided to walk to the exam center, knowing I’d never make it on time. But just as I was about to give up hope, my little brother Jason appeared, saying, “Em, I got you covered. Help is on the way.”
Before I could process what was happening, I heard the sound of police sirens getting louder. Jason explained that he had seen Linda turn off my alarms and had called the police for help. The officers arrived, and after a brief explanation, they offered to drive me to the exam center.
We arrived just as the exam was about to start. The doors were closed, but one of the proctors noticed us and approached. The officers explained the situation, and after a brief hesitation, the proctor allowed me to take my seat.
A few hours later, I emerged from the exam room feeling relieved and proud. My little brother had saved the day, and I was grateful for his quick thinking. When I got home, my dad apologized for Linda’s actions and told her to pack her bags. She was no longer welcome in our home.
As I reflected on the events of the day, I realized that sometimes, life can be unpredictable and challenging. But with the support of loved ones and a determination to succeed, we can overcome even the toughest obstacles.
