It’s unimaginable how cruel some people can be to innocent animals. Riona, a sweet pitbull mix, was brutally set on fire by her owner last year, leaving her with severe burns and a long road to recovery.
The horrific incident occurred in Nutbush, Tennessee, where witnesses saw Riona running down the street engulfed in flames. The smell of gas confirmed that she had been intentionally set on fire. Riona’s ear was burnt off, but thankfully, her left eye was saved thanks to emergency medical response.
Riona was taken in by Tails of Hope Dog Rescue and received medical treatment at Bluff City Veterinary Specialists. Her road to recovery was long and arduous, involving twice-daily full-body wraps to protect her skin and a series of skin grafts to treat the fourth-degree burns all over her body.
Despite the trauma she endured, Riona remained in good spirits throughout her recovery. Her sweet nature and wagging tail captivated everyone around her, making her story go viral on social media.
As Riona’s story spread, supporters sent in donations and gifts for the dog. Meanwhile, the person responsible for setting Riona on fire, 43-year-old Quishon Brown, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault and two felonies.
Riona’s story also played a significant role in the passing of a new animal cruelty bill in Tennessee. Months passed, and Riona’s condition slowly improved. Finally, almost exactly a year after the horrific incident, Riona is going to her new forever home.
Tails of Hope Dog Rescue shared the exciting news on Facebook, announcing that they would be embarking on a ten-hour road trip to bring Riona to her new home. Riona’s new family has experience in the medical field and will provide her with the love and care she deserves.
