For many years, Nyakim Gatwech lived in refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya. She thought that life in the United States would be “like heaven.”
But when Gatwech moved to Buffalo when she was about 14, she spent a lot of time by herself crying over how people treated her because of the colour of her skin.

The model from South Sudan now lives in Minnesota. For years, she was picked on because of her dark skin and told things like, “You don’t take showers.” That’s why your skin is dirty. Or, “Nyakim, smile so we can see you.” “We can’t see you.”
