The concept of beauty is undergoing a significant transformation, driven in part by social media platforms where women can proudly showcase their natural beauty in all its diverse forms. A recent study published in the International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology, and Education confirms this shift, revealing that the average American woman now wears a size 16 to 18, a departure from the previous standard size 14.
The study, which analyzed data from over 5,500 U.S. women, found a notable increase in the average waist size, from 34.9 inches to 37.5 inches, over the past two decades. According to Susan Dunn, a lead expert on the study, this information is vital, as it can help many women improve their self-image by understanding where they fit within the average range.
Dunn, along with co-author Deborah Christel, is calling on the fashion industry to adapt to these changes. They emphasize that these women deserve to have access to clothing that fits their bodies, rather than being forced to conform to outdated and unrealistic beauty standards.
The message is clear: it’s time for the fashion industry to update its sizing standards to reflect the reality of the modern American woman, embracing her true shape and size. By doing so, the industry can promote a more inclusive and diverse definition of beauty, one that celebrates the unique qualities of every woman.
