A man decided to pay a visit to his 90-year-old grandfather who lived in a secluded rural area. He spent the night and the next morning, his grandfather prepared breakfast for him consisting of eggs and bacon. However, when he sat down to eat, he noticed a film-like substance on his plate.
He asked his grandfather, “Are these plates clean?” His grandfather replied, “Those plates are as clean as cold water can get them, so go on and finish your meal.” The man was taken aback by the response but decided to let it go.
Later that day, while eating the hamburgers his grandfather made for lunch, he noticed tiny specks around the edge of his plate and a substance that looked like dried egg yolks. He asked again, “Are you sure these plates are clean?” His grandfather, without looking up from his hamburger, said, “I told you before, those dishes are as clean as cold water can get them. Now don’t ask me about it anymore!”
As the day went on, the man was getting ready to leave for dinner in a nearby town. However, his grandfather’s dog started to growl and wouldn’t let him pass. He said, “Grandfather, your dog won’t let me out.” Without diverting his attention from the football game he was watching on TV, his grandfather shouted, “Cold Water, Go lay down!”
The man couldn’t help but burst out laughing at the realization that Cold Water was not only the name of the dog but also the answer to his question about the cleanliness of the plates. He left his grandfather’s house with a funny story to tell and a lesson learned about the importance of asking the right questions.
