Teachers are some of the most underappreciated members of our community, yet they play a vital role in shaping future generations. It takes a special kind of person to devote their life to teaching, inspiring, and mentoring young minds.
Jonathan Oliver, a physical education teacher at WG Nunn Elementary in Georgia, is one such hero. He recently gained recognition for a thoughtful gesture towards one of his kindergarten students during a basketball game.
When five-year-old Kristen Paulk asked Oliver to help her put her hair back in a ponytail, he didn’t hesitate. He knelt down on a basketball to reach her level and carefully tied her hair back, unaware that he was being recorded.
The video of Oliver’s kind act was uploaded to YouTube and quickly went viral. It caught the attention of Good Morning America, who interviewed the 34-year-old father of three.
Oliver’s response to the attention was humble and heartfelt. “We [teachers] want to make them feel like they’re at home and that they enjoy being here,” he said. “We try to love on them as much as possible.”
Kristen’s mom, Miyah Cleckley, was touched by the video and praised Oliver for his kindness. “I always know that Kristen is in very good hands with him,” she said.
This story is a reminder of the many ways that teachers go above and beyond for their students. They are true heroes who make a lasting impact on young lives.
