That’s exactly what happened to four Louisiana police officers who stopped by their local Outback Steakhouse for dinner after a long shift. What they didn’t expect was the surprise that awaited them when they received their receipt.
The officers had been regulars at the restaurant, and waitress Zoë Rao had grown fond of them. “They’re the sweetest guys,” she said. “I enjoy waiting on them.” Manager Arline Wood, an 18-year veteran of the company, also recognized the officers and decided to do something special.
Together, Wood and Rao devised a plan to show their appreciation for the officers’ service. When it was time for them to pay their $67 tab, they were surprised to find that it had been taken care of. But that was only the beginning.
On the receipt, Wood and Rao had written a heartfelt note, thanking the officers for their service and telling them to “be safe!” The officers were touched by the gesture and showed their gratitude by leaving a hefty tip.
The story didn’t end there, however. The Slidell Police Department posted a photo of the receipt on their Facebook page, and it quickly went viral. While Wood and Rao didn’t seek to draw attention to themselves, their act of kindness inspired countless others to show their appreciation for law enforcement officers.
As Wood noted, “We didn’t do it for the publicity.” Nevertheless, their selfless act has reminded everyone of the importance of thanking those who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe.
