A restaurant in America wants to sue a customer after he left a $3,000 tip on a $13 meal. 

Tipping is one of the most debated issues on the internet.

But while people continue arguing over whether 15 percent or 20 percent is acceptable, one customer took things to a completely different level.

The bizarre story began when customer Eric Smith visited Alfredo’s Pizza in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

According to reports, Smith ordered a plate of stromboli totaling just $13.

But when the bill arrived, restaurant staff were stunned to discover he had left a $3,000 tip.

The enormous gratuity was reportedly connected to a social media movement known as “Tips For Jesus,” where anonymous individuals leave huge tips for restaurant workers and other service staff.

At first, employees at Alfredo’s believed they had simply witnessed an incredible act of generosity.

For waitress Mariana Lambert, the money came as a complete shock.

She later admitted the life-changing amount meant far more to her than just the money itself.

“It really meant a lot to me because everyone’s going through stuff,” Lambert explained at the time.

“It really touched my heart. I still can’t believe it. I’m still in shock.”

The restaurant itself also praised the customer for what they believed was a thoughtful gesture designed to help someone during difficult financial times.

Stories involving massive tips often go viral online because they tap into something emotional — the idea that one small moment of generosity can dramatically change somebody’s day, week, or even life.

The shocking twist nobody saw coming

Roughly six weeks after the meal, Alfredo’s Pizza reportedly received devastating news.

According to Alfredo’s Vice President Leslie Minicozzi Galacci, the customer disputed the charge through his credit card company.

The restaurant had already paid waitress Mariana Lambert the full $3,000 by company check before learning the payment had been reversed.

Galacci told Newsweek: “We received notice 45 days after he dined in our establishment.

“We had already paid Mari the $3,000 by a company check so currently we, as the owners, are hit with the loss.”

The reversal reportedly left the business itself responsible for covering the entire amount.

Management initially hoped there had simply been some sort of misunderstanding or accidental issue with the card company.

Restaurant staff attempted to contact Smith directly in hopes of resolving the situation privately.

However, according to management, they struggled to get any response from him.

Manager Zachary Jacobson later explained how frustrating the situation had become for everyone involved.

“We thought somebody was actually trying to do a good thing,” he told WNEP-TV.

“And then now we are, what, three months later? Not even, and there’s nothing. There’s nothing to show for it at this point.”

Jacobson added: “It’s just a little aggravating right now. It’s been causing a lot of nonsense and drama.”

The story quickly exploded online as people debated whether the customer had intentionally reversed the payment or whether there had been another issue behind the scenes.

Many social media users sympathized with the restaurant and the waitress, arguing that reversing such a large gratuity after it had already been paid out created an unfair situation.

Others questioned whether restaurants should wait longer before handing over unusually large tips to employees.

The restaurant ultimately decided to sue the customer

After reportedly failing to resolve the issue privately, Alfredo’s Pizza made the decision to pursue legal action against Eric Smith.

The restaurant hoped to recover the $3,000 they said they lost after the charge dispute.

“Unfortunately, we had to file charges through the magistrate’s office because now we’re just out of this money at this point,” Jacobson explained.

“And he told us to sue him, so that’s what we’re going to end up doing, I guess.”

The unusual case gained national attention not only because of the massive gratuity, but because Alfredo’s Pizza itself holds a strange place in pop culture history.

The Scranton restaurant is famously linked to the hit TV show The Office, which frequently referenced Alfredo’s Pizza Café throughout the series.

That connection only helped fuel further online discussion surrounding the bizarre tipping saga.

As the story spread across social media, many people continued debating who should ultimately be responsible for the missing money.

Some argued the restaurant should never have paid out the tip before ensuring the charge fully cleared.
